Safeguarding Policy for Children and Young People

As a counsellor working with children and young people, it is imperative to provide a safe and supportive environment. This safeguarding policy outlines the principles and procedures to ensure the welfare and protection of children and young people in my care.

Policy Statement

I am committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and young people. I believe that:

– The welfare of the child or young person is paramount.
– All children and young people, regardless of age, disability, gender, racial heritage, religious belief, sexual orientation, or identity, have the right to equal protection from all types of harm or abuse.
– Working in partnership with children, young people, their parents, carers, and other agencies is essential in promoting their welfare.

Legal Framework

This policy has been drawn up on the basis of legislation, policy, and guidance that seeks to protect children in the UK. Key documents include:

– Children Act 1989 and 2004
– Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018
– Keeping Children Safe in Education 2023
– Sexual Offences Act 2003
– Data Protection Act 2018
– The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

Roles and Responsibilities

I am responsible for and can attest to the following:

– My familiarity with and following of this safeguarding policy.
– Regular attendance of safeguarding training and updates.
– The reporting of any concerns about a child or young person’s safety or welfare immediately.

Recognising Abuse and Neglect

I will remain vigilant to the signs and symptoms of abuse and neglect, which can include:

– Physical abuse: injuries or unexplained bruises, burns, or fractures.
– Emotional abuse: excessive withdrawal, fearfulness, or anxiety.
– Sexual abuse: inappropriate sexual behaviour or knowledge.
– Neglect: poor hygiene, hunger, untreated medical conditions.

Responding to Disclosures

If a child or young person discloses that they are being abused or neglected, I shall:

– Listen carefully and without judgement.
– Reassure the child or young person that they have done the right thing by speaking up.
– Not promise confidentiality, as the information must be shared to safeguard the child.
– Explain what will happen next, including who the information will be shared with.
– Record the disclosure accurately and promptly, using the child’s own words as much as possible.
– Report the disclosure to my supervisor immediately.

Reporting and Recording

– Any concerns about the welfare of a child or young person should be recorded promptly and accurately.
– Records should include the date, time, and details of the concern, as well as the action taken.
– All records must be kept securely and confidentially.
– I will liaise with my supervisor and determine the appropriate course of action, which may include contacting social services or the police.

Confidentiality and Information Sharing

– Information about a child or young person will be shared only with those who need to know and in line with statutory guidance.
– In cases where a child’s safety or welfare is at risk, the need to share information will take precedence over the need for confidentiality.
– Consent from the child or young person and/or their parents/carers will be sought where possible and appropriate, except where doing so would increase the risk of harm.

Training and Development

– I have undergone an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check which I renew annually
– I  have completed safeguarding training at the beginning of their employment and attend regular updates.
– Training covers the identification of abuse, responding to disclosures, and reporting procedures.

Monitoring and Review

– This policy will be reviewed annually or following any significant incidents or changes in legislation.
– Feedback from clients, parents, children, and young people will be considered to improve safeguarding practices.
